Slang Insider

Dear Sal,

I thought you might like to see SlangInsider.com's

Slang of the Day:

Blockbuster (noun)

Something, such as a film, that achieves widespread popularity and great sales.

Example:
I love going to the movies, but I always avoid the hollywood Blockbusters, because they all seem to be aimed at teenagers.

Celebrity quote:
"A beginning novelist writing a successful Blockbuster novel is about as likely as 'a high school athlete trying to play with the Dallas Cowboys.'"
-Albert Zuckerman - Writing the Blockbuster Novel

The first blockbusters were large bombs developed in the early years of World War Two by the Royal Air Force. They were called block busters because they were supposedly capable of destroying an entire housing block at one time (block meaning apartment building, rather than city block). It was first used to describe entertainment in the 1950s.

Sincerely,
Jimmy
